Zapiro, Z-News and Satire on South Africa
Coming from South Africa, it hasn’t been difficult to enjoy Zapiro’s political cartoons in the newspaper over the years. And every now and then my father-in-law sends us a fax with another “that’s a goodie”.
This morning, to my delight, I read an article about the Z-News puppet project that was going to be aired on the SABC (South African Broadcasting Company) in November 2008, but the project was pulled beforehand. The SABC chose the safe route instead of possible law suits. Want to see toes being humourously stepped on? Watch this video (23:29 min)
The politicians have been rather generous in creating good material for this famous satirical cartoonist. Subjects range from Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki to Dr Manto … more chef than surgeon – this clip is rather poignant since the Brumbies rugby player, Shawn Mackay, recently passed away from an infection he picked up in hospital. Hmmm.
With the elections coming up on 22nd of April, we’re all keeping a close eye on what’s ahead for the Rainbow Nation.
You can also see shorter clips of this video on Zapiro’s website.
I also enjoyed watching Zapiro giving a speech at Pollsmoor Prison about his encounter with former South African President, Nelson Mandela and was quite horrified, but not surprised, to read about how ANC President Jacob Zuma is sueing Zapiro (gulp!)
Viva la freedom of expression!
