Ladies and Gentlemen, we have ourselves a winner!
The correct answer that we were looking for was “bird made out of wrought iron”. That people even added bird species was a fun surprise. Being the first to add the correct answer, K. van Zwam will be receiving a keyring in the post. Other telephonic suggestions were wide and varied … from metal chains to posts at Rotterdam Harbour. Thank you to everyone for taking part
The photo is actually of a secretary bird that has been made out of wrought iron. These wrought iron birds (and other magnicifent sculptures) are made in Zimbabwe from recycled metal. We bought our scuplture in Johannesburg at the craft market on William Nichol Drive, where you get all sizes and types of animals, even 2 metre tall giraffes!
About a month or so before Christmas we had a lovely snowfall which created a mini-winter wonderland in our garden, providing a little Santa hat for our sculpture. A snow-covered conifer provided the festive background. It was unanimous! Our 2008 Christmas greeting had to be a fusion of Africa’s raw creativity of Africa and Holland’s pristine nature.
We hope that 2009 is happy, healthy and prosperous for you!
