About Us

Tours and Tales.com was created in 2003 by Marcel and Victoria Koning with the aim of sharing the spirit of adventure with like-minded travellers. It takes a special kind of person to get out of their comfort zone.

We said ‘I do’ in the woods in South Africa. Then deciding against becoming scuba diving instructors in the Caribbbean, we moved to the Netherlands in 2001, which gave us 12 years of invaluable insight into the cultural difference between laid-back “warmer climates” and work-focussed “colder climates”.

At the end of 2013, a 4-month sabbatical took us to the idyllic village of Cotignac, Provence. Time to face the cost of not following one’s dream and running that dreaded hamster-wheel … burnout.

The decision to move South was quickly made; terrifying and exciting in equal measures, we downsized our lives and are working with businesses and property owners. We’re still learning French! And probably working as much as we did in Holland, but the lifestyle and culture suits us much better.

Are you keen to ‘get uncomfortable’?

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.

Live the life you have imagined.

As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.”

Henry David Thoreau

We hope to inspire you to live the life you love. Getting out of your comfort zone is … uncomfortable. But when you’re doing what you love, you’re living life with passion and that makes you feel alive.

For us, it’s travelling. And we do a lot of it in our Land Rover “Dakota”. We enjoy the character of this temperamental old classic, and are learning to fix her bit by bit. What floats your boat?

Having stumbled upon this little French village, we packed our bags with no plans, no job, no security but a new start to experience another part of the world…

Stuff happens, people help you, and good luck does come your way – you just need to be there when it does!
